South Beach, a Little Gem

Saturday we went and explored South Beach, a delightful, small beach that it is not signed from the Pac Rim highway. It lies just south of the Kwisitis Visitor Centre which is at the south end of Wickaninnish Beach. The view from the Visitor Centre looking southwest showed an overcast sky that hung low over the water, bathing the sea and land with a soft, even light, lovely for photography.

South Beach is a short hike in and has some quite nice large rocks, which while not exactly stacks, are certainly the closest we have seen to the wonderful stacks of Washington and Oregon coasts.

Following along the shore to the south, a tiny, beautiful island snuggles in an enveloping cove, the water is very calm today.

As usual, it's quite often the details that catch my eye.

Back at the north end of the beach, there are some really spectacular rocks and a hidden channel that has a 'blowhole' effect that you can both see and hear. The channel you see in the picture below is similar but on the north side. Great fun to sit just in front of this foreground rock and watch the waves surge up the channel, spilling in wild abandon over the rocks.

On the trail on the way back out, this tree, covered with lichen, seemed another iconic west coast image.

Hope you enjoyed it.
