Beach Combing at Combers Beach

Combers Beach is situated between Wick Beach and Long Beach, and this morning, we walked from the trailhead at Combers, south almost down to the Interpretive Centre at the south end of Wick Beach. The tide was out exposing a wide expanse of the beach. Not a cloud in the sky and warm enough for shorts.

BTW, a "comber" in this case is a long curling wave, not someone who combs the beach for treasure, although that's exactly what I do when I'm on any beach.

The path down to the beach winds down through the rainforest and the greenery is just staggeringly beautiful, with the ferns, skunk cabbage, salal, salmonberry and the Nootka roses blooming

I'm always astounded by what washes up onto the sand, the different shells have an astonishing palette of colours ranging from subtle to intense; the shapes display the many designs of Mother Nature.

Moulted Dungoness crab shells litter the beaches here by the thousands, their carapace's each decorated with intricate patterns.

At the back of Wick Beach are dunes that were once used to test munitions and have only recently been declared safe again. (What on earth were they thinking to do this kind of thing in such a beautiful place? Things that make you go "Hmmm!")

Sitting on a driftwood log at the back of the beach, having a sandwich, listening to the surf and soaking up the sun is one of life's great pleasures here at the edge. Cheers!
